MONROE - Monroe Clinic is featuring the work of local artist Anthony Wahl, staff photographer at The Monroe Times.

Focusing on rural daily life in southern Wisconsin, Wahl said he explores his surroundings to be able to tell visually compelling stories. Wahl's photography has been published in a variety of news publications and has won several awards through the Wisconsin News Photographers Association and Wisconsin Newspaper Association.

The lower level of the hospital building consists of daily images taken from both Green County and Lafayette County fairs. The lobby consists of 10 portraits that were taken during the 2013 Green County Fair and feature pre-teen and teenage 4-H and FFA members. Portraits include Matt Schmitt, Alexa Marty, Travis Wolf, Molly Wyss, Sam Kind, Bethie Cleasby, Tyler Murray, Hailey Jones, Brian McCullough and Taylor Behnke. The first level features a profile on Phil and Renee Porterfield, who farm 216 acres between Brodhead and Albany. All but two images on the second level were captured with a Holga, an inexpensive plastic camera known for its low-fidelity and intense vignetting.

Wahl received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in photography from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He grew up in Brodhead and graduated from Brodhead High School, and has family history throughout Green and Lafayette counties. He joined the Times staff in December of 2010.

Monroe Clinic has partnered with the Monroe Arts Center to offer rotating exhibits which change quarterly. Exposure to art can reduce the need for pain medication, promote shorter hospital stays and reduce patient and caregiver stress, exhibit organizers said. In addition to offering patients and visitors a unique visual experience, art showcases can bring local artists and community together. Rotating art pieces are available for purchase by the public.
