MONROE - A list of 100 suggestions and ideas for saving the city money goes to department heads, aldermen and committees this week.

One of the main committees interested in the list will be the Finance and Taxation Committee, especially as it goes into setting the 2012 budget starting in October.

"We have a hundred ideas to enhance the city and save money at the same time, thanks to the City of Monroe," said Mayor Bill Ross, chairman of the committee.

Suggestions came from committee members, department heads and citizens.

The ad hoc committee tasked with collecting and developing the ideas spent their last meeting reviewing the list.

"This is the final wrap for all the work and suggestions," Ross said.

The committee was not setting any policies, but rather creating a document that could be useful for two to three years, according to Phil Rath, city administrator.

Ross said copies of the list will be available to citizens at city hall and will be posted on the city website soon, offering "transparency into the budget process, which will be difficult this year."

"We're all in this together," he added.

Rath will present the Finance and Taxation Committee a first draft of the budget, put together by department heads, in early October.

Ross expects the council to dismiss the appointed committee members, Michael Boyce, Chuck Koch, Phil Rath, George Thompson, Cathy Maurer, Catherine Kehoe, Jean Ruda and Larry Brown, and to end the committee in October.
