MONROE - George Buss will portray Abraham Lincoln as a part of the "Bugles, Bayonets and Beyond" series at 7 p.m. today, May 20 at the Monroe Theatre Guild, 910 16th Ave. The title of his performance is "A Just and Lasting Peace: Abraham Lincoln Speaks." The audience will learn what this country would be like today if Lincoln had lived.
Buss' ancestors arrived in Stephenson County, Ill. in 1847. He is the sixth generation to live in Illinois. Members of his family still occupy the family's original home in Lena.
For 15 years, Buss and the late Rich Sokup interpreted Lincoln and Douglas almost 400 times for local, state and national audiences. They appeared on the stage at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C., Gettysburg, Chicago, Atlanta, Topeka, New Orleans, among numerous other cities. They were joint recipients of national honors from the Association of Lincoln Presenters.
Buss has since been portraying Lincoln alone to stellar acclaim.
Buss has appeared regularly at the Museum in Newport News, Va., the David Davis Foundation in Bloomington, Ill., Ford's Theater, Gettysburg for the Lincoln Forum, New York Historical Society, Harold Washington Library, as well as locations from California to Virginia and Wisconsin to Louisiana. He has also performed at the Monroe Arts Center.
The board of directors of the Abraham Lincoln Association selected Buss to appear in the statewide "Lincoln Press Conference Series" celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Lincoln, which was received with critical acclaim.
He is president of the Stephen Douglas Association, vice president of the Lincoln Douglas Society, board member of the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin and the Lincoln Forum Board of Advisors, among others.
The next and final installment for this series is "Healing the Heart of Democracy: A Gathering of Spirits for the Common Good" with Parker Palmer, Carrie Newcomer and Gary Waters. This presentation/performance will be at 7:30 p.m. June 6 at the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St. The event is open to the public. It is free for MAC members. General admission tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students 18 and under. A reception underwritten by Barb Woodriff and Peter Guenther will be immediately after the performance to celebrate the evening program, the artists and the series.
