MONROE - The City of Monroe License Committee did not have a quorum Wednesday night.
The committee skipped its meeting and its recommendations, and allowed the City Council to decide the fate of one "Class B" fermented malt beverage and liquor license.
Committee members Keith Ingwell and Mark Coplien were unable to attend the meeting, and at the last minute Charles Schuringa called in sick, leaving alternate and newly-appointed member Kent Kallembach unable to act, due to a lack of quorum.
Scheduling a special meeting of the committee later this week would not have helped.
City Clerk Carol Stamm explained to Mayor Ron Marsh and other aldermen present that The Depot Sandbar, Inc., doing business as The Depot Bar, needed the decision made by Feb. 28., before either the committee's or the council's next meeting.
The Mayor and aldermen decided the license request could be sent straight to Council.
But for a brief moment, Stamm hesitated. She was silently running down the roll call to see if any other alderman had called in an absence.
"You still have seven council members," she said.
"Then we have a quorum," Marsh said.
The seven aldermen present unanimously approved the license for The Depot Bar.
