Late-night fire in New Glarus not suspicious

NEW GLARUS - When New Glarus firemen arrived at a one-story, two-bedroom home around 9:45 p.m. Friday in the 200 block of 10th Avenue, they could see smoke and flames through a street-facing window.

"The crew had the fire knocked down within seconds, and confined it to the area of origin," Capt. Scott Larson said. "But, there is heat and smoke damage throughout the house."

The fire was contained to a bedroom, an adjacent bathroom and hallway, Chief David Anderson said Saturday. Anderson said a ceiling in the bedroom had come down on its own before firemen arrived.

"It is my understanding that the owner discovered the fire when she came home and went to a neighbor's house across the street to call (the fire department)," Anderson said.

Anderson said the cause of the fire had not been determined, but it was not suspicious. Larson had 20 firefighters from the New Glarus Fire Department, but also called in about 20 more from Belleville, Monticello and Mount Horeb.
