Last Monroe school day set for June 12

MONROE - Monroe schools will be in session through the morning of Friday, June 12.

The school board voted Monday to include a half-day of instruction June 12 to make up for the day vandalism closed schools earlier this month. School was canceled Friday, April 17, after numerous windows at Monroe High School were shot out with some type of projectile.

Superintendent Larry Brown said the district had no other option, given the proximity to the end of the school year. Schools could have extended the early release day scheduled for Thursday, April 30, as well as Thursday, June 11, which would have been the last day of school. However, numerous things already have been planned for the early release day this week, making it difficult to change the schedule on short notice.

Another option would have been to extend the school day by five minutes each day, but "instructionally that's not beneficial," Brown said.

Teachers and staff are up against a time crunch because the first three-week summer school session is due to start Monday, June 15.

Friday, June 12 was intended as a teacher work day; now teachers will need to work Friday afternoon and either Thursday or Friday evening.

Brown said the district will work out those details with the teachers union.
