Kwik Trip to sell old store

MONROE - Since December 1992, Kwik Trip has stood within the 1000 block of 9th Street. It will soon move to the corner of 8th Street and 8th Avenue to provide more access and additional space for the business.

Kwik Trip is slated to open its new building Aug. 3. After that, company spokesperson Steve Wrobel said the company plans to sell the old building but did not have more information.

Jim Coblentz, construction supervisor for Kwik Trip, has overseen the building of a number of convenience stores since May 22, 1990. He noted the new building will be more accessible and provide more space for those looking to park outside the store. A common complaint is the difficulty customers face in exiting and entering the parking lot at the current location. Drivers either have to exit onto a busy 8th Street or drive on 9th Street and travel a number of blocks to reach the main flow of traffic once more.

Wrobel said accessibility was a factor in the decision to build a new store but that the need to accommodate 21st century demand was the most important motivation.

"This is simply to better serve people," Wrobel said. "Our new stores are built for today's needs. When we built the current building, we were not attempting to do what we do today."

The facility offers more choices in coffee to grocery items, Wrobel said, making the need for a larger store a necessity.

City Building Inspector Ryan Lindsey said in discussion with the city roughly six months ago, Kwik Trip officials indicated that the older building will be put up for sale. Stipulations will be put in place prohibiting the new occupants from operating a similar facility, such as a convenience store, and gas tanks will be removed. Lindsey added that the area is zoned for commercial buildings, which means the location will be used as some type of business in the future.

The final day for Coblentz to complete inspections is July 28. On Aug. 2, in late evening - roughly around midnight, he said - the current Kwik Trip will close. Coblentz said the team will move items to the newly constructed building, which they plan to open at 5 a.m. Aug. 3.
