JUDA - Members of Juda High School's service learning class are cooking up some help for their canine friends.

Students of the class will have a bake sale from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the high school cafeteria to raise money for the Green County Humane Society.

All of the proceeds will be for the care of 20 dogs taken Sunday from the W3500 block of Middle Juda Road in Jefferson township due to possible animal neglect.

"We've helped out the humane society before with fundraising," service learning teacher Alice Kranig said. "I've got kids coming in during study hall and on their free time to help out.

"They like animals, and they're really gung-ho."

Kranig said some of the students know Bonnie Bitz, 46, who was arrested on tentative charges of animal neglect, and Donald W. Svendsen, 45, who was arrested on a probation hold.

Sixteen of 17 dogs that were kept inside are Chihuahua/terrier mixes. The other is a black Labrador. The outside dogs are collie mixes. The dogs range in age from 3 months to 8 years.

Kranig said students picked out recipes, and volunteers are making the items, which include cookies, cupcakes, brownies, "puppy chow" and "dirt dessert." Items will cost between 50 cents and $3.

People are welcome to drop off items for the bake sale on Saturday morning. Kranig asks that items already be priced.

"We want everybody to come and help out," Kranig said. "It's all for a good cause. It's for the dogs."
