MONROE — A Juda man pointed a handgun at several people during a “street altercation” in downtown Monroe last week, according to police.
Steven W. West, 28, faces two counts of intentionally pointing a firearm at a person, one count of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of disorderly conduct by use of a dangerous weapon, all misdemeanors.
He stood mute on the charges at his initial appearance in Green County Circuit Court. His signature bond is set at $2,000 with conditions that he not drink or go into bars or liquor stores and have no contact with four specific people. He is next in court for a pre-trial conference Oct. 22.
The incident happened in the 1000 block of 16th Avenue on the west side of the downtown Square shortly after midnight in the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 27.
People in the area called police after overhearing an altercation out in the street, said Chief of Police Fred Kelley.
Police located a handgun in West’s vehicle, and witnesses reported he had pointed it at several people, according to Kelley. The gun was not discharged.
West told police he pointed the gun “in fear for his life,” Kelley said, noting that an investigation of the incident didn’t find evidence that West was acting in self-defense.
Court records show no criminal record for West.
