Jail time for assault, escape
New Gavel

DARLINGTON — A 20-year-old man was sentenced Jan. 6 in two separate cases in Lafayette County Circuit Court to 10 months in jail and three years on probation for fourth-degree sexual assault and fleeing police in a stolen ATV.

Corey R. Gleason, formerly of Shullsburg and now living in Cuba City, pleaded no contest to a felony charge of escaping custody and to misdemeanor charges of theft, fourth-degree sexual assault, resisting an officer and battery. Other related charges were dismissed.

As conditions of his probation, Gleason is ordered to have no contact with the victim of the assault and participate in the Lafayette County Domestic Abuse Intervention Program.

His convictions stem from two incidents last July. According to the criminal complaints:

On July 27, deputies were called to a residence on Galena Street to investigate allegations that Gleason pushed and kicked his pregnant girlfriend. She said he pressured her into having sex and when she resisted, he forced sex on her. She said he called her names and threatened to kill her.

Gleason admitted to drinking alcohol and having issues controlling his anger. He also admitted to hitting the victim and throwing her onto the bed. A restraining order was issued against Gleason.

On July 31, deputies were dispatched to locate Gleason for a reported violation of the restraining order. An officer found Gleason on a stolen ATV on Galena Street in Darlington, but Gleason fled.

The ATV eventually lost power on County Z and police were able to detain and handcuff Gleason. Then, as an officer tried to put Gleason in a squad, Gleason slipped the officer’s grip and ran off, still handcuffed. He was quickly caught again.

Police found a loaded .243 bolt-action rifle on the back of the ATV.

Gleason said he stole the rifle because he was afraid of his landlord, who he said had pointed a gun at him. Gleason said he drove the ATV from the Platteville area to Darlington to get help with his landlord situation, then fled police out of fear, knowing he had violated the restraining order.
