MONROE - The fifth Green County Jail inmate with Huber privileges to walk away from custody in the Past 12 months was reported Wednesday, according to a statement from the Green County Sheriff's Department.
At about 2 p.m., Robert E. Copeland, 37, walked away while out of the Green County Jail, which having Huber privileges allows, according to the statement.
Copeland was serving a misdemeanor child support commitment. Escape charges against Copeland will be referred to the district attorney. Escape is a class H felony, which carries a penalty of six years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
Local law enforcement was advised of Copeland's actions, and is directed to take him into custody if located, the statement said.
Prior to Copeland, Matthew D. Schupbach, 25, Brodhead, walked away after a job interview July 13, but later was apprehended in Illinois. Johnnie N. Phiffer, 41, walked away from Monroe Clinic June 12 after a medical appointment. He turned himself in at the Dane County Sheriff's Department a few days later. In May, Luis Miranda walked away from custody after he went to the career center at Pleasant View. He was taken into custody in Minnesota in June. In October 2008, Nichole Abaunza walked away from custody and returned five days later.
