MONROE - There will be an increased police presence at all Monroe schools today "out of an abundance of caution," MHS principal Jeriamy Jackson wrote in an email this morning, May 3, 2024.
The safety precautions come on the heels of an active shooter situation in nearby Mount Horeb on Wednesday in which a 14-year-old student with a gun was killed by police outside of the Mount Horeb Middle School, causing a lockdown of nearly 8 hours in the district.
"It was reported that a (Monroe) high school student made a comment that could be perceived as a threat although at this time it has not been verified," Jackson wrote.
The Monroe Police Department was notified immediately and began handling the investigation. Authorities have made contact with the individual and family in question, Jackson noted.
"As with any possible threat or report we will follow up and investigate to ensure the safety of all of our school community," Jackson wrote. "I want to recognize those that have done the right thing in proactively reporting what they have heard, being aware of their surroundings and doing their part to keep their school and their peers safe."
The schools will provide any additional communication and information if necessary, he added.
