DARLINGTON - An Aurora, Illinois, woman was sentenced Tuesday in Lafayette County Circuit Court to 14 days in jail and three years on probation in connection to a September 2016 burglary of the Darlington Tri-Com Cellular store that resulted in a total loss of $29,166.47.
Vanity LaStar Garcia, 26, pleaded no contest to a Class F felony charge of burglary and a Class A misdemeanor charge of criminal damage to property, both as a party to a crime. A Class G felony charge of theft was dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
Garcia also received an imposed and stayed prison sentence of 18 months initial incarceration and two years on extended supervision.
Court records indicate that on Sept. 17, 2016, Garcia made a fake 911 call to distract police, telling them she was in the Union Grove Cemetery in Darlington and being chased by two people wanting to kidnap and rape her.
While she made that call, two co-defendants threw rocks through the glass door of Darlington Tri-Com Cellular and stole 44 cellphones with a total value of $27,711.12.
The co-defendants, Robby Lamont Patton, 28, Sugar Grove, Illinois, and Melvin Leon Whetstone, 32, Aurora, currently have warrants out for their arrests and are incarcerated elsewhere - Patton in Kane County, Illinois, and Whetstone in a prison.
Patton has a warrant out for his arrest in Green County in connection to a December 2016 burglary of Fuzzy's Audio and Video in Monroe.
Garcia has also been sentenced for similar crimes in Dyersville, Iowa, and Kane County.
Judge Duane Jorgensen said Tuesday at Garcia's sentencing that there were many aspects to the case that troubled him, namely the calculated nature of her diversion.
He also said that this seems to be one of many crimes she has committed that are similar in nature. He said with one co-defendant in jail and the other in prison, it shows the gravity of the crime.
