MONROE — A man incarcerated in the Green County Jail with Huber work release privileges was arrested Aug. 14 in Evansville after allegedly stealing a vehicle and going AWOL.

Matthew W. Schmid, 40, Albany, faces charges of felony escape and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. The Wisconsin Department of Corrections also placed a probation hold on him.

According to the Green County Sheriff’s Office, Schmid was identified as the suspect in a vehicle theft reported at about 2:30 a.m. from a business in the 1600 block of 4th Avenue West in Monroe. Police determined Schmidt took the vehicle while out on work release.

About an hour later, a Rock County deputy located the stolen vehicle in Evansville, conducted a traffic stop on it and took the driver, Schmidt, into custody.

Green County deputies then picked Schmidt up from Evansville and took him back to the Green County Jail. The vehicle was returned to its owner.
