MONROE - The city's downtown Square isn't ready for a parade this year.
So the route of Friday's Monroe High School Homecoming parade will be altered due to streetscape construction work downtown.
In the past, the parade has gone around the Square. But Friday's parade starts at 2:15 p.m. at the high school, and travels north on 15th Avenue to 13th Street, where it will turn east. The parade will continue south on 16th Street, west on 26th Street and back to the high school.
Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said he talked to high school administrators and they agreed to the change. Kelley said people like to gather on the Square to watch the parade. He hopes people will set up lawn chairs along the parade route.
"I'm hoping it's like Cheese Days," Kelley said. "I think people will be able to enjoy the parade along this route."
There will be two or three extra officers on duty Friday because there are a few more streets that will have to be closed, he said.
"I don't see any problems with having the parade route changed," Kelley said. "There's always a pretty good crowd that comes out to the parade."
The Cheesemakers take on Milton at 7 p.m. Friday in the homecoming football game.
