Homecoming festivities planned

MONTICELLO - Monticello Homecoming will be celebrated July 9-12, sponsored by the Monticello Community Club.

In preparation for the festivities, the municipal lot will be closed to the public effective midnight, Sunday, July 5, and will remain closed until midnight Monday, July 13. Any vehicles left in the municipal lot during this time will be towed and issued citations by the Monticello Police Department.

Also, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, there will be no parking of any vehicles along the temporary parade route on East Lake Avenue (County F), both sides from Main Street east to Adams Road and along Main Street (County C), both sides from East Lake Avenue north to E. Coates Ave. (County C east). Any vehicles found on the parade route will be cited and towed at the owner's expense, according to the Monticello Police Department.

Thursday, July 9, begins the weekend with softball tournaments and carnival rides for the kids starting at 7 p.m.

Friday night highlights are a fish boil at 5 p.m. in the Octagon Shelter, served by the FFA and FFA Alumni (in case of rain, held at the Legion building) and talent show at 7:30 p.m. at Ford Theater. Electric Blue begins playing at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday's activities include a motorcycle ride, pop can races at 10:45 a.m. and duck races at 11 a.m. on the Sugar River, a tug of war tournament at 1 p.m., canoe races around Lake Montesian at 2 p.m., a "triathlon" at 3 p.m. and a program at Zwingli United Church of Christ from 6 to 7 p.m. Music is by Technical Knock Out - TKO - beginning at 8:30 p.m. and breaking at 9:45 p.m. for fireworks. Wristband afternoon for kids is from noon to 3 p.m. at the carnival.

Registration for the poker run is from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. at the Boars Nest with the run beginning at 11 a.m. Registration for the tug of war is at noon. Weight classes are: men's unlimited (8 men), women's unlimited (8 women) or coed unlimited (4 men and 4 women). Entry fee is $25 per weight class. On Sunday, Zwingli United Church of Christ will lead services at 9:30 a.m. at Montesian Gardens. A chicken barbecue begins at 11 a.m. in the Octagon Shelter, a parade begins at 2 p.m. followed by music and community water fights.

All weekend enjoy carnival rides, softball tournaments, mud and grass volleyball tournaments, 3 on 3 basketball, beer stand and lots of food. For more information about the volleyball tournament or 3 on 3 basketball, contact Duane Garrison at 214-6922.
