Home stretch for Supercenter

MONROE - The new Walmart Supercenter in Monroe still has about 90 associate positions to fill.

About 150 extra employees are being hired, and store manager Ron Fager said he is about one-third of the way through the hiring process.

"We are still taking applications, and people can apply online," he said.

Walmart applications can be found at http://walmartstores.com/Careers/

The store is expected to open Sept. 2, following a ceremony at 7 a.m.

Monroe's Walmart Supercenter is "looking great" inside and out, according to Fager.

Crews will begin setting up product shelving units Monday and should be finished by Friday. Computer and cash registers will be installed the following week. But there will be no self-checkout aisles.

With the potential assistance many people need at self-check aisles, "it's better to have a real person checking you out," Fager said.

The store has received its "Class A" license from the city to sell packaged liquor and fermented malt beverages.

"We're really excited about that," Fager added.

Outside, the landscaping is looking great, Fager said, except for about a dozen trees that failed to take root and will be replaced.

The City of Monroe Plan Commission on Wednesday night approved Walmart sign changes.

A 50-foot-high sign still will be located on the southeast corner of the property, visible from Wisconsin 11/81, but a second, monument sign on 6th Avenue will come down from a 30-foot pole to set only eight to 10 feet off the ground.

"As you come up over the bridge, (the 30-foot sign) just looked too out-of-proportion," Fager explained.
