Historic district to stick with case-by-case OKs

MONROE - The Historic Preservation Committee will continue to deal with historic district resident issues as it has done, in a case-by-case fashion, if the homeowner wants to remodel or paint their home.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18 the committee unanimously passed a motion to continue to deal with residents who want to discuss signage or remodeling as they always have, by talking it over individually. Sue Disch, who brought up the issue, said there are very few residential homes in the historic district, as few as three homes, she estimated.

"Residents in this district pretty much already know the rules," she said.

David Riese, chairman to the board, said he did not want to manufacture a problem by changing the way they already deal with things.

"It's a wheel that has been turning already, let's not break it," Riese said.

The committee also passed the allowance for a new sign for the business Love & Light Massage; a $40 fee to continue the board's membership to the Wisconsin Association of Historic Preservation Commissions; and opted to keep the boundaries of all downtown districts the way they are. The Lance Building will also be nominated for the historic preservation excellence award because the building was restored well.
