MONROE — This year’s Green County Fair was full of fun, sweets, agriculture, and celebration for the community and its youth. Running from July 19-23, there was plenty of time for people to come and experience the nostalgia of the fair.
People from all over the region came to enjoy the fun, and experience all that Green County can do. The fair brings people back to a time of community and face to face interaction.
“[It’s] a long standing tradition,” said Ruth Andrews, a spectator. “[I] look forward to bringing my grandkids every year.”
During the weekdays there was plenty of open space to run around and enjoy all the rides, as the entertainment didn’t start until after 6 p.m. The sounds of carnival games, and music combined with the aroma of fair food fill the area alluring kids and adults alike to join the fun.
Ticket sales were, “very good,” according to Leslie Brugger, the secretary of the Fair Board, the entertainment line up captured the attention for family, youth, and adult enjoyment. There was something for everyone. Over the weekend there was a record high spectator count for the Livestock Auction. Young adults proudly showed off their livestock to spectators and potential buyers. “People came to support the youth,” said Brugger.
This year’s fair had a new addition of an ‘Open Carry’ rule where adults ages 21-plus were able to drink openly on the grounds with the use of a wrist band. Brugger said the results of this new rule were, “Really good. People weren’t being crammed in.”
As night began to fall the crowd grew and the excitement was felt in every corner of the fairgrounds. Kids ran to wait in line for the rides, as others watched the event in the auditorium.
“Everybody comes back,” said Jamie Pila, a volunteer passing out wristbands.
This year’s fair took time to show gratitude for the people who keep the community safe, with free admission and events specialized for specific groups. The community continues to give back to show that no one’s work goes unseen.
With new additions and plenty of old traditions it goes without saying that the Green County Fair holds a special place in the community’s heart. With lots of labor and love year after year people are able to transport back to a simpler time.
