Helen Mears Contest awards presented at Woman's Club social

MONROE - Awards for the Helen Mears Contest were presented May 3 at the Monroe Woman's Club Spring Social.

In Class A, the 2D-Painting and Drawing award recipients were: first place, Carson Leuzinger (seventh grade), "Cloudy Room"; second place, Jamie Keene (eighth grade), "Clowning Around"; and third place, Susy Barradas (eighth grade), "Wild Thing." Receiving honorable mention were two seventh-graders, Blake Klitzke, "Jungle Sunset" and Max Leopold, "Rainbow Selfie."

In 3D-Sculpture, the award recipients were: first place, Madison Zoellick (eighth grade), "Orange Crush Octopus"; second place, Gavin Jenson ( eighth grade), "The Pheasant"; and third place, Logan Clark, (eighth grade), "Skull Lurking in the Dark." Honorable mention recipients were Janylah Kearin (eighth grade) for "Crispy Teapot" and Luke Dubach (eighth grade) for "Chicken Little Teapot."

The Poetry award recipients were: In category one (grades one, two and three), first place, Finian Hoeper; second place, Phillip Schuppner; and third place, Althea Eckdhal, all titled "What Makes Me Happy." In category two (grades four, five and six), first place went to Ryan Mathiason for "Thanksgiving." In category three (grades seven, eight and nine), first place went to Rachel King for "Story of My Life." In category four (grades 10,11 and 12), first place went to Benjamin Dombkowski for "Our Driving Force"; second place to Reily Pond for "All in the Time of Human Beings"; and third place to Abigail Bethke for "I Read, Therefore I Am."

The Short Story award recipients were: In category one (grades one, two and three), first place, Beckett Smith for "Castle Day"; second place, Emiliano Torres for "Learning how to Swim"; and third place, Leah Magellan for "Me and Mayv." In category two (grades four, five and six), first place, Katrina Sathoff for "My First Deer"; second place, Sonia Tomasiewicz for "Best Friends"; and third place, Piper Bird for "Ways of the Fox."

The award recipients from the Southern Prairies District Convention were: In sculpture, third place went to Gavin Jenson for "The Pheasant," and in painting, second place went to Jamie Keene for "Clowning Around."

This is an annual event and is made possible with help from the local schools to encourage student participation.
