MONROE - A Belleville man accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl on the Badger State Trail had a preliminary hearing rescheduled to Jan. 28 due to errors in the original criminal complaint.
Matthew G. Tweed, 35, appeared in Green County Circuit Court on Tuesday for a scheduled preliminary hearing, but defense and prosecution determined they needed more time to amend the complaint. The errors found in the original complaint were not specified at the hearing.
Tweed is charged with five Class C felony counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child and two Class D felony counts of child enticement to sexual contact.
According to the original complaint, Tweed allegedly met the girl in August when she was running along the Badger State Trail in Green County. Tweed allegedly assaulted her multiple times. The girl said she allowed Tweed to run with her, and at one point Tweed allegedly stopped to kiss and touch the victim. The victim told police there were four occasions of sexual contact between she and Tweed, each time on the trail, with the last contact in September. Tweed alleged the intercourse was consensual.
Tweed works as a security guard at UW Hospital in Madison and is currently on administrative leave. The hospital said in a statement that it conducted a background check on Tweed when he was hired in 2009 and again in 2013, but he had no criminal record before these charges.
Tweed remains free on a $10,000 cash bond and a $60,000 signature bond barring him from having contact with the alleged victim or any unsupervised contact with minors.
