MONROE - Two people were injured in a two-vehicle, head-on collision at about 8:45 a.m. Friday in the W7100 block of Wisconsin 11 just east of Keller Road. The accident shut down traffic on the highway for a period Friday morning.
In a news release issued Friday afternoon, Green County Sheriff's Department Lt. Richard Wyttenbach said initial investigation showed that a WE Energies pickup truck driven by Jonathan W. Briggs, 38, New Glarus, was westbound on Wis. 11 when he saw an eastbound vehicle in his lane.
The eastbound vehicle, a 1997 Ford Taurus, was driven by Vera Elizabeth Minkie, 18, Browntown.
Wyttenbach said Briggs steered his vehicle to the left of the center line to avoid a collision.
According to Briggs, Wyttenbach said, Minkie jerked back into her lane at the last second.
The vehicles came to rest on the south shoulder and eastbound lane of the highway.
Minkie was not wearing a seatbelt. She had to be extricated from the vehicle. Minkie sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Monroe Clinic by Green County Emergency Medical Services. She later was transported by REACT helicopter but Wyttenbach didn't know which hospital she was taken to. No further information on Minkie's condition was available at press time.
Briggs was wearing his seatbelt and was taken to Monroe Clinic for non-life-threatening injuries.
There were no passengers in either vehicle.
The accident shut down traffic on Wis. 11 near Keller Road, causing traffic to be detoured.
Both vehicles were impounded pending investigation. The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting in the investigation. No citations have been issued.
