DARLINGTON - The superintendent of the Pecatonica School District died Tuesday, June 25, from a car crash in Benton Township.

Gary A. Neis, 54, Benton, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Wisconsin 11 near Horseshoe Bend Road, according to a news release Tuesday evening from Lafayette County Sheriff Scott Pedley.

First responders were dispatched to the scene at 2:41 p.m. A preliminary investigation shows Neis was westbound when the accident happened. There were no passengers with him in the vehicle.

His 2008 Volkswagon Beetle two-door "was observed to have swerved to the right," according to the news release. Neis tried to correct the swerve, "however, the vehicle continued to move across the eastbound lane and then it went off the south side of the roadway."

It hit a tree and overturned.

This is the second fatality on Lafayette County roads in 2012, Pedley said. The crash remains under investigation by the Lafayette County Coroner's and Sheriff's Offices.

Benton First Responders, the Benton Fire Department and Hazel Green Ambulance assisted at the scene.
