BRODHEAD - Habitat for Humanity of Green County has scheduled an informational meeting for families interested in applying to become the partner family for the home that will be built in Brodhead this summer. The meeting will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 10 at the Brodhead Memorial Library, 1207 25th St.

Those attending the meeting will be provided with an application form, and Habitat volunteers will provide information on how to complete the application. In order to qualify, families must meet three criteria:

1. Show need for decent housing and have income between 50 and 80 percent of the median income for a family of its size in Green County. The County Median Income is established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It differs based upon the number of people in the family.

2. Be willing to partner with HFHGC. The family needs to provide evidence of ability to pay the mortgage and a history of having met past obligations. At the end of the build, Habitat for Humanity holds the mortgage on the home, and the family pays zero interest, taxes and insurance for the life of the mortgage. The family is expected to maintain the home in good condition.

3. Be able to complete 250 hours of sweat equity for each able bodied adult member of the household. These hours are achieved both through work on the build and through participation in other HFHGC activities. Families are able to recruit family members and friends to volunteer and help them achieve their required sweat equity hours.

House plans will be available at the meeting. The house being built is a three-bedroom single story home with a basement. Information will be shared regarding the price of the home and anticipated monthly mortgage payments. The house must be ready for occupancy no later than the end of 2013. Because of this deadline, the group wants to select a family as soon as possible.
