MONROE - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Green Haven Family Advocates is holding a "Quilts that Care" silent auction in October. The quilts are displayed in Monroe at The Garden Deli and Anchor Bank, and in New Glarus at New Glarus Hometown Pharmacy.

Information and pictures of the quilts are available at www.greenhaven4help.com.

According to Chandra Pelikan, Green Haven Family Advocates director, more than 400 new victims of family violence sought help at Green Haven in 2009. Pelikan said clients vary in age, economic status and race.

"National statistics show that one in four people in a relationship are abused," Pelikan said.

Some of the warning signs of an abusive personality are:

Displays violence against other people and/or pets

Is jealous of time spent with family and friends

Blames others for their problems

Often criticizes appearance, weight or actions

Causes the other person to be afraid if they leave and what might happen to them or their family

Green Haven offers a support group to survivors of family violence from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. Childcare is provided at no charge but must be requested in advance.

More information is available by calling Green Haven on its 24-hour crisis line, (608) 325-7711, or at www.greenhaven4help.com.
