MONROE - The Green County treasurer's office in conjunction with the Wisconsin County Treasurer's Association is dedicating the week of May 9-15 to verify that all eligible real property owners received the lottery credit on their 2015 tax bills.
Last year, the average lottery credit in Green County was about $100. The exact amount is based upon the school district in which a home is located.
To qualify for the lottery and gaming credit, an owner must be a Wisconsin resident, the owner of the dwelling, and use the dwelling as their primary residence as of the certification date (Jan. 1, 2015). If temporarily absent, typically for a period no longer than six months (hospital, vacation, incarcerated, etc.), it is the home to which the owner returns. Principal dwelling means any dwelling used by the owner of the dwelling as his/her primary residence. A property owner may claim only one primary residence (sec.79.10 (1) (dm), (9) (bm), Wis. Stats.).
The lottery credit can be obtained only by having a signed application on file. Contact the county treasurer's office at 608-328-9435 for any questions. For property owners who did not receive the credit, the treasurer's office will help them complete the paperwork and file the forms with the Department of Revenue to claim the late lottery credit and ensure that the credit is applied to their 2016 tax bill.
For homeowners eligible for the lottery credit but not sure if they received it, there is a link on the Green County website, www.co.green.wi.gov, with instructions to help determine if the lottery credit was received on the tax bill.
For those who met the qualifications and did not receive the credit, follow the instructions on how to file for the late lottery credit, or contact the treasurer's office at 608-328-9435 or by emailing shawkins@greencountywi.org. The treasurer's office will assist with completing the necessary paperwork to receive the credit for this year and next year's tax bill.
Anyone who was not a resident of a property on Jan. 1, 2015, but were as of Jan. 1, 2016, may qualify for the credit on the 2016 tax bill. The 2016 application must be completed to receive that credit. The application and instructions can be obtained on the county's website by clicking on 2016 Lottery Credit Application.
