MONROE - Gov. Scott Walker and Wisconsin Secretary of Tourism Stephanie Klett presented Green County Tourism a $17,000 Joint Effort Marketing grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism recently.
The grant funds the continued local efforts to market Green County to new visitors and grow tourism during the summer and fall season of June through October. Goals for the project include a 5 percent increase in visitor spending during the grant timeframe and a 3.5 percent increase of total spending for the year.
"Green County is famous for its Swiss heritage, award-winning cheese and craft beer, along with small-town hospitality that attracts travelers from all over," Walker said. "The JEM grant program from the department of tourism allows destinations like Green County to reach new potential visitors and ultimately generate a positive economic impact in their community."
In fiscal 2013, the department funded 56 Joint Effort Marketing projects, awarding a total of nearly $1.2 million dollars. The project continues to implement a research-based marketing strategy founded on Green County's combination of natural resources and heritage, along with the artistry and mastery involved in processes like cheesemaking and brewing. Tactics include driving traffic to their newly redesigned website, increasing social media efforts and further leveraging their brand. Grant funds will target Madison and Chicago northern suburbs with a comprehensive marketing plan that includes TV advertising and special promotions.
"A previous branding grant from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism gave us the foundation of research necessary to play to our strengths," said Noreen Rueckert, Green County Tourism director. "This grant reinforced that investment of support from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism and was essential in development of a marketing campaign that was focused, on point, and true to the brand."
JEM grant funds are available to nonprofit organizations for the promotion of Wisconsin tourism events and destinations. The state can fund up to 75 percent of a project's first-year advertising and marketing costs, and provide support for second- and third-year projects with decreasing amounts for funding until projects become self-sustaining. The mission of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is to market the state as a premier travel destination for fun by executing marketing programs and establishing strategic partnerships. For more information, visit www.travelwisconsin.com.
