Green County Historical Society: Ludlow Hotel

(Photo supplied by the Green County Historical Society)
This photo of the Ludlow Hotel was taken from the east looking west on 9th Street. The impressive building was built for Arabut Ludlow in 1884 and was razed in 1955 to make room for the new building to house McLellans and the J.C. Penney stores. As seen, the Haren Agency is housed in the northeast corner of the building. The Ludlow Bar originated in this building, later being housed in two locations after the building was razed. A small portion of the original Monroe Evening Times building can be seen across the street on the right. Pictures of the front of the Ludlow Hotel and the Monroe Times building can be seen on pages 70 and 71 of the "Pictorial History" of Monroe. The Green County Historical Society museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through October. Questions may be directed to Matt Figi at 608-325-6503 or mfigi48@tds.net.
