MONROE - The Green County Board of Supervisors learned the 2009 budget will increase by about 2 percent and the tax rate will increase by 27 cents.

The 2009 proposed budget is about $12.9 million, an increase of about $1 million, or 2.18 percent over the 2008 budget. The tax rate will increase from $4.66 in 2008 to $4.93. The owner of a $150,000 home would pay $739.50 in taxes for county purposes. The owner of a home valued at $400,000 would pay $1,972 in taxes for county purposes.

The tax levy percentage will increase 8.95 percent in 2009 compared to 11.06 percent in 2008. The debt service payments of about $1.1 million, bridge and culvert repairs of about $52,000 and library payments of about $370,000 are exempt from the levy limit of 2 percent imposed by the state.

The board was given a copy of the proposed 2009 budget, and supervisors will have a chance to look at it, ask questions and make notes of concerns before the public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Green County Courthouse.

In other business Tuesday, the board approved an additional dispatcher position for the Green County Sheriff's Department to be hired by Jan. 1. Sheriff Randy Roderick said his department handled about 70,000 calls in 2007, which included about 7,500 9-1-1 calls. There are five dispatchers at the department and Roderick said another would help alleviate the added workload and make it easier for the dispatchers to deal with emergency calls.

The board also increased the amount of the penalty charged for delinquent real estate taxes from 25 percent each month to 50 percent each month. It increased the amount charged for checks with non-sufficient funds from $25 to $35. Both increases are similar to other amounts charged by other counties.
