MONROE- A Brodhead man will be sentenced in April on felony charges of third degree sexual assault and exposing genitalia to a child.

Antonio Gonzalez Robles, 26, arrested Sept. 7 at the dairy farm west of Brodhead where he worked, was originally charged with a Class B felony charge of repeated sexual assault of the same child and a Class D felony charge of child enticement.

In a plea agreement with the state for the amended charges, Gonzalez Robles pleaded no contest under the Alford plea - in effect, admitting that the state could present sufficient evidence to convince a judge or jury to find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

With the Alford plea, Gonzalez Robles "is conceding that the state has strong evidence that (he) committed these crimes," said Green County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Vale.

For the purposes of these proceedings, the plea "has the same effect as a plea of guilty," Vale added.

Vale convicted Gonzalez Robles of one count of third degree sexual assault, a Class G felony, punishable by up to $25,000 or 10 years in prison, or both. Vale also convicted him of exposing genitals or pubic area to a child, a Class I felony, punishable by up to $10,000 or up to 42 months in prison, or both.

Assistant District Attorney Jeff Kohl recommended five years prison for the first count, followed by 18 months in prison for the second count. Kohl also asked the court to impose five years of extended supervision, plus two years extended supervision for the second count after prison. The state also asked for lifetime supervision of Gonzalez Robles for the first count.

Because of his conviction, Vales reminded Gonzalez that, if he is not a citizen, he could be deported, denied re-entry into the United States and denied naturalization under federal law.

Vale ordered a pre-sentencing investigation, to be finished by March 22, and set a sentencing hearing for 2:30 p.m. April 10.

The original criminal complaint alleged Gonzalez Robles had vaginal and anal intercourse with an 8-year-old girl at a residence in the Town of Decatur.

The assaults reportedly started in 2008, about a month before the girl's fourth birthday, and continued until the summer of 2012, occurring in the girl's bedroom, in her mother's bedroom, in a playroom and a barn.

The girl told investigators he threatened to kill her and her family if she told on him.

Gonzalez Robles denied having sexual contact with the girl, according to Julie Blumer, a detective with the Green County Sheriff's Department, who investigated the case.

Gonzalez Robles told investigators he is not a U.S. citizen or here legally, but has been living in the Brodhead area about five years. Investigators report confirming his identity using the Mexican identification card he carries. Local authorities also reported the felony charges to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

State court records show no previous criminal history for Gonzalez Robles in Wisconsin besides several convictions of driving without a valid license. In October 2010, a domestic abuse-related restraining order was in effect against him for about two weeks.
