MONROE - A 16-year-old girl will face a felony charge for threatening last week to harm Albany students.
The threat was made on social media site Yik Yak on Wednesday. In the post, the teen reportedly threatened to harm Albany students today, May 24. The threat caused the school to partially lockdown Wednesday as police searched lockers for contraband.
Although the threat is not be believed to have been credible, it's against state law to convey a message intending to cause evacuation, disruption, public inconvenience or fear, Sheriff Mark Rohloff said in a news release Monday.
He said the decision to charge the girl was made in conjunction with the district attorney's office after reviewing website and Internet provider records and forensic information from a personal cell phone.
The teen has been removed from school and will remain in the custody of her parents.
"We are satisfied that a proper determination has been made of the person who is responsible for these threats, and now release this information in order to alleviate some of the concerns in the community," Rohloff said in the release.
The Albany Police Department and the Green County Sheriff's Office will be at the school today assisting the staff with searches for prohibited articles and will continue to help the district as the school year draws to a close.
