MONROE - The Green County Humane Society will ask the City of Monroe for a license to sell beer at Summer Fair on the Square Aug. 9.
Main Street Director Barb Nelson presented the idea to the board Wednesday at its monthly meeting.
Nelson said the event begins at 7 a.m. and family-focused activities take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the band Fedora will perform. During that time, the Humane Society could operate a beer tent. All proceeds would go to the shelter, and the beer will be donated by Minhas Craft Brewery.
The Humane Society would staff the tent. It also would have to be insured for the activity.
The board voted to approve the application to the city. The Public Safety Committee will take up the matter at its July 14 meeting. If the committee approves, the request will go before the Monroe City Council Aug. 5.
The board also learned the shelter continues to operate with a profit. The Humane Society has taken in about $107,500 in 2008 and has spent about $96,300.
The board briefly discussed shelter hours, and whether the hours should be changed. No action was taken.
