MONROE - The Green County Humane Society showed a profit of more than $30,000 in 2009, according to the organization's treasurer's report that was released at its monthly meeting Wednesday.

In 2009, the humane society spent about $214,845. Revenue for the humane society was $245,446.

"It shows we're moving in the right director," Paul Barrett, board president, said.

Other board members said it shows the public supports the shelter.

Profit in 2009 was about $13,000 more than the shelter's profit in 2008. In 2008, the shelter spent about $206,000 and took in about $223,000.

The humane society held 15 fundraisers in 2009, compared to 13 in 2008.

One of the reasons for the higher profit in 2009 was the fact the shelter held its annual Pedal for Paws bike ride. In 2008, the ride wasn't held. About $10,500 was raised from the event.

Revenue from memberships for the humane society also increased by about $1,400 from 2008, and money from animal sponsorships was about $2,600 higher in 2009.

Plans for a new shelter are still in the preliminary stage, Barrett said. The shelter hasn't decided on a site for the new building and no plans have been finalized.

The humane society hopes to be able to build a shelter in the future that will provide more space for the animals and employees.
