MONROE - The Green County Humane Society is closer than ever to finding a new home.
The City of Monroe Community Improvement Committee will meet Wednesday to discuss the possible sale of land in the Honey Creek industrial park to the Green County Humane Society.
Gary Kramer, president and CEO of Badger State Ethanol and a member of the society's Building Committee, said the society has four sites it's looking at in a couple industrial parks in Monroe.
Kramer confirmed the site the Community Improvement Committee will discuss at 5 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall is in the Honey Creek industrial park, near Badger State Ethanol. He would not name the specific location of the proposed site.
"I'm really not at liberty to discuss that right now," Kramer said. "When the time is appropriate to make our location public, we'll certainly do that."
Wednesday's meeting is the first step in finding the most suitable site for the society.
"We just want to meet with the city and exchange ideas," Kramer said. "We want to share what our vision for the future is for the society and see if we can come to some sort of agreement with the city."
The society has been at its current location at 1500 Sixth Ave. since 1978. Shelter Director Tonya Kelly said the building and an accompanying trailer present space and water issues.
"We have a severe lack of space," Kelly said. "We have dogs with cages in the middle of the room simply because there's no space for them."
Kelly said a tube that runs underneath the main building carries water to the trailer.
The building's location next to Wisconsin 69 also is not ideal, Kelly said.
"It's tough crossing the road with dogs, because we're so close to the highway," Kelley said. "If a dog got out, or got away from someone, they head right to the road."
