MONROE - The Green County Humane Society has halted dog adoptions until Sept. 1 because of kennel cough at the shelter, humane society Vice President Mary Jane Grenzow said Tuesday.
"Kennel cough, also known as Bordetella, is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs," Grenzow said in a news release. "Antibiotics are used to treat the most severe cases and it is generally not a dangerous condition."
The airborne virus could have been brought into the shelter by a stray dog.
Grenzow said kennel cough poses no risk to healthy adults, but young children and people with compromised immune systems should stay away.
The dog adoptions were halted as a precaution on the advice of veterinarians.
People still can view dogs and fill out an application to adopt a dog.
The humane society is a no-kill shelter and is open from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. The shelter is closed Mondays, Wednesdays and holidays.
More information about the shelter is available at greencountyhumane.org or by calling 325-9600.
