MONROE - The Green County Energy Assistance Program, which provides assistance to those struggling with the increased costs of fuel, will begin offering assistance Saturday, Oct. 1.

Through the program, eligible households can receive a benefit towards their heating and electric usage that is sent directly to the heating and electric vendors they use. These benefits are designed to pay part of the yearly energy costs for a household, officials said in a release.

Energy assistance eligibility is based on the income of the household (no asset test), with the previous three months income being used to determine eligibility.

For example, a one-person household with an annual income of $24,319 or a three-person household with an annual income of $39,285 would be eligible.

For detailed information on eligibility and assistance, contact the Green County Energy Assistance Program at (608) 328-9344 anytime after Sept. 19, and request an appointment to meet with an energy staff member or a request a mail-in application for the 2011-12 Energy Assistance Program.
