MONROE - A gas line leaked after contractors for the street construction hit a gas line at 12:20 p.m. at the intersection of 13 Avenue and 9th Street.

The construction company, Westphal and Company Inc., were digging to put in signal bases when a rock hit the gas line.

Monroe Fire Department officials said that contractors do not normally turn off the gas when doing road construction. If gas was turned off, they would have to turn several blocks off, officials said.

Six surrounding houses were evacuated until the gas line was turned off. WE Energies declined to comment at the scene.
