MONROE - A gas leak at the New Frontier mobile home park at the intersection of Wisconsin 69 and 17th Street led to the evacuation of residents around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said a gas valve had been broken off the meter, probably by vehicle backing into it. Natural gas was leaking into the air, accompanied by a hissing sound.

Members of the Monroe Police Department closed off 17th Street from Wis. 69 to Eighth Avenue and evacuated residents of nine mobile homes as Monroe Fire Department firefighters stood by with water hoses in hand as a precaution.

Power to the area also was taken offline while crews fixed the valve.

WE Energies capped the broken valve at about 6:45 a.m.
