GALENA — A 35-year-old Galena man was arrested for attempted murder after a crossbow shooting on Powder House Hill Road June 22.

Ronald A. Smith was charged June 23 with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated battery in connection with the shooting of Michael Roellich, 34, Galena.

Smith is in the Jo Daviess County Jail on $500,000 bond. He faces six to 30 years in prison on the attempted murder charges and two to five years in prison on the battery charges.

A Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office news release said Smith lived in Galena until a domestic incident with his now-estranged wife. Since then, Smith wasn’t living in Galena and was thought to be living in Colorado, the news release said.

Roellich was visiting Smith’s estranged-wife — whom the news release did not name at her request — when Smith appeared around the corner of the house armed with a crossbow around 9 p.m. Smith allegedly shot Roellich in the back as he and the woman tried to flee, and the arrow became lodged in Roellich’s torso.

Roellich ran to Park Avenue in Galena, where a resident called 911, the Sheriff’s Office said. Roellich was taken to Midwest Medical Center in Galena and then a higher-care facility. He is expected to make a full recovery, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Smith was arrested after a search by Jo Daviess County deputies including both K9 units and Galena and East Dubuque police. The K9s established a track, and a crossbow and duffel bag were found.

Just after midnight Thursday law enforcement contacted Smith’s father, who said he had located Smith and was going to drive him to the Jo Daviess County Jail. Smith was arrested around 12:20 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit assisted the Sheriff’s Office.
