MONROE - Residents report seeing at least two funnel clouds near Monroe Monday.
Tina Gilbert, an employee of Shopko, Monroe, was working outside in the parking lot moving flowers when she heard someone yell, "Oh my gosh, I saw a funnel cloud dropping out of the sky."
She looked up to see the first of two funnel clouds disappear, Gilbert said. Then, she watched the next one form and go away.
"It was kind of an interesting sight at the end of the day to see something like that in the clouds," Gilbert said. "It's not something you see every day."
Jesi Klarer, Monroe, also spotted something that appeared to be a funnel cloud around 4 p.m. Klarer said she stopped by Beverage Mart on Monroe's east side to see her husband Scott and saw a funnel-like cloud while looking south of County KK. She described it as an odd-shaped cloud that stopped just below the tree line and stayed there, not moving, for several minutes.
At about 4:14 p.m., Kevin Schmidt, 9, witnessed a funnel cloud from the back door of his family's home less than a mile from the Illinois stateline near Twin Grove. He took several photos of the cloud while facing south, his mother Nancy said in an e-mail to the Times Monday. The cloud dissipated within a few minutes, she said.
No tornado warnings were issued for Green or Lafayette counties by the National Weather Service, according to Green and Lafayette counties sheriffs' departments.
A tornado warning was issued for northeastern Stephenson County, Ill., until 4:30 p.m.
There have been no reports of touch-downs or damage.
