MONROE - Heather Schroeder isn't one to ask for help but now she has no choice.

She and her two sons escaped injury Sunday after a fire destroyed their home.

The Monroe Fire Department responded to a report of a fire at their home around 9 p.m. at 1519 Seventh St. Firefighters noticed flames on the second floor of the two-story home. There was heavy smoke and heat damage to the second floor.

"I don't even know what we can salvage from the house," Schroeder said. "We didn't have a lot to begin with."

She plans to go to the house today to see what, if anything, she can keep but it's going to be difficult because everything in the house is frozen, she said.

Schroeder and her two sons, one is in middle school and the other is at Parkside Elementary School, are staying at Super 8 courtesy of the American Red Cross. They have to be out of the motel by the end of the week, she said. The Red Cross will pay the first month's rent if they can find a place to live, she added.

"I hate to publicize the fact we need help but I have no choice," Schroeder said. "This is the first time we've ever been like this."

Beverly Johnson, who owns the home, said the family needs housing and will need to replace clothing, household belongings and food items.

The youngest son wears sizes 6-7, while the older boy wears sizes 16-18. Schroeder wears size 18 pants and size XXL for shirts, she said.

A fund has been set up for the family at Woodford State Bank. Anyone can donate money to help the Schroeder family.

Woodford State Bank is located at 403 W. Eighth St. People also can call the bank at 325-7766.
