MONTICELLO - Monticello's Homecoming was a mix of food, entertainment, carnival rides and music on Saturday.

The annual event, held since 1954, is a chance for families and friends to gather, assistant village clerk Sharon Schrieber said.

"We have people of all ages here," she smiled. "It's a great weekend for families."

People spent time at a number of activities.

Kids of all ages took their chances to win a stuffed animal or other prizes at dart games and skee ball, younger children enjoyed carnival rides and the braver older kids rode on rides that spun them upside down.

People filled the park to eat food, play volleyball, play softball or just meet friends.

Mud volleyball players attracted a large crowd of spectators who cheered and laughed as players reached for the ball and then found themselves tumbling into the mud.

No one could stay clean as the players became more intent on winning each point.

Ryan Pelletier, Monticello, said the key to being able to play in more than a foot of mud is to keep moving.

"That keeps you from sinking in," he said before he went back into the game.

Cory Gabioud, Argyle, said each player knows they're going to be covered in mud by the time the game is over.

"I go right into it," he laughed. "You might as well get it over with."

Other scheduled weekend events included canoe races on Lake Montesian, a teen talent show, a tug-of-war competition, fireworks and a parade.

All the money raised from the weekend goes toward the community park, Schrieber said.
