MONROE - Monroe residents will feel the full impact of a recent increase in water rates this September. The Monroe Common Council approved a water rate increase of 16.1 percent March 16, which was approved by the Wisconsin Public Service Commission April 1.
Because the timing of the rate increase fell within a quarterly billing period, the PSC calculated a weighted rate for Monroe Water Utility bills for the second quarter, which is March through May. Mike Kennison, water utility supervisor, received the weighted average rate May 26.
The city's second quarter water bills were calculated at the old rates for March and under the new rates for April and May.
For example, at an average residential house, the flat service rate was $10.82 and the new rate is $12. The customer was charged $11.60 on the second quarter bill.
