MONROE - One of the most popular works of American musical theater is coming to the Monroe High School Performing Arts Center stage when the Monroe Arts Center (MAC) and Monroe Theatre Guild's (MTG) present the award-winning musical "Fiddler on the Roof."
A total of seven performances are scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9, with matinees on Sunday, Aug. 3 and Aug. 10 at 2:00 PM.
Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, "Fiddler on the Roof" has been lauded by critics again and again, and won the hearts of people all around the world. The story is set in a little village in Czarist Russia, and it follows Tevye (played by Jim Hurlbert), a poor Jewish dairyman, as his three oldest daughters marry. Tevye struggles to retain his position as head of the household in selecting his daughters' husbands, but with each daughter, he finds he must choose between their happiness and his beloved traditions.
As he chooses to change his traditions to reflect a changing society, he endures the objections of his wife, Golde (played by Tracy Bristow), the matchmaker, Yente (played by Gloria Hendrickson), and the townspeople of Anatevka, who find their future is as precarious "as a fiddler on the roof." The fiddler, played by Patty James, animates the story, supporting such memorable songs including "If I Were a Rich Man," "Sunrise, Sunset," "Tradition," and "Matchmaker."
"Fiddler on the Roof" won nine Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Composer and Lyricist, as well as multiple Drama Desk awards since its opening in 1964. In the 1971 film version of the Broadway musical of the same name, the movie won three Academy Awards, and was nominated for several more.
Tickets for "Fiddler on the Roof," directed by Susan Nanning-Sorenson, are at $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under, and may be purchased by contacting the Monroe Arts Center at 325-5700 or at the MAC box office located at 1315 11th St. in Monroe.
