MONROE - Frank Pivonka said he has wanted to open up a hot dog restaurant for about 20 years and is now making it a reality.

Frank's Franks will open soon at 1117 16th Ave., south of the Square where Boomerang Bakery was previously.

"I told my fiancee it's the year of the dog," Pivonka said. "Let's make it happen."

Currently, Pivonka is selling hot dogs, Italian beef, tamales and Blumer's soda from his food cart. Pivonka, who previously worked in manufacturing, orders his meat from Vienna Beef out of Chicago.

He hopes to open up the restaurant the second week in May and will have an expanded menu that will include gyros. He will also have his cart at Concerts on the Square.

Pivonka, who grew up west of Chicago and moved to Monroe in 1997, takes pride in selling Chicago-styled food.

"It brings a lot of people back to their roots," Pivonka said.

In the next five or 10 years, Pivonka would like to open another Frank's Franks somewhere else and potentially make it a chain.

"It's supposed to be a simple place to eat," Pivonka said. "Everyone likes my products so far."
