Fowdy wins 2014 Distinguished Educator Award

FOND DU LAC - The Wisconsin Association of Foreign Language Teachers announced that Karen Luond Fowdy, former teacher of German at Monroe High School and Monroe Middle School, received the 2014 WAFLT Distinguished Educator Award.

WAFLT's highest recognition, the Distinguished Language Educator Award, is given annually to an individual of the language teaching profession who has demonstrated long-term achievement and service to the organization and to the profession at the local, state, regional and national levels.

She received her Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences from Colorado Women's College, and a Fulbright Scholarship for graduate study in Berlin, where she attended the Freie Universität. She completed her master's degree in German Literature from the University of Colorado and secondary teacher certification at the University of Northern Colorado University. Fowdy is one of the authors of Planning Curriculum for Learning World Languages, published in 2002 by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. In 2009, Fowdy was named World Language Teacher of the Year by the Wisconsin Association for Language Teachers and Wisconsin AATG Distinguished German Educator in 2010.

Fowdy is a regular presenter at world language conferences at the state and regional level, and presented at the American Council for Language Teachers national conference in 2012. As independent consultants, Fowdy and former MHS Spanish teacher, Lisa Hendrickson, present workshops and advise school districts about World Language curriculum design and instruction.

WAFLT, one of the largest state language associations in the country, strives to promote, strengthen and facilitate the teaching and lifelong learning of world languages and cultures in schools and communities.
