MONROE - The Monroe Parks and Recreation Fourth of July Celebration on July 4 at Twining Park will be an all-day event.
The City of Monroe fireworks will begin at about 9:45 p.m., including the Wisconsin Bank and Trust Sky Concert, which the bank has sponsored for 25 years. To ensure the safety of the people in the park and to avoid distraction during the display, vehicles will not be able to drive through the park during the fireworks.
All day co-ed volleyball and slow-pitch softball tournaments will be held at the park. Entertainment at the Bandshell includes the Tot Lot Singers at 10:30 a.m. and the City Band concert at 8 p.m.
Children's activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. will include: go fish; safari surprise; touchdown pass; super heroes punch a brick wall; bean bag toss; "Frozen"; face painting and tattoos; wheel of misfortune; pick-a-sucker; patriotic pitch; kerplunk Star Wars; moon walk; "Finding Dory"; noodle toss; Jake and the Never Land Pirates hook toss; and hole-in-one.
A petting zoo will be across from the jet at Twining Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Horse and wagon rides around the park from 1 to 4 p.m. will start in the parking lot closest to the Bandshell.
Many concessions stands will be located in the park. The Parks and Rec food stand located at the Twining south shelter will feature pizza and bread sticks, strawberry freckled lemonade, water, Gatorade, soda, nachos and ice cream products. Ribeye, hamburger and pulled barbecue pork sandwiches and potato salad will be near the Bruni Shelter. Other food will include hot dogs, brats, cotton candy, snow-cones, gyros, Chicago-style hot dogs, cream puffs and grilled cheese sandwiches.
Anyone wishing to make a food donation to the Parks and Rec food stand may do so by dropping off at the Parks and Rec office by June 30 or the Twining south shelter on July 4. Needed items are bags of Tostitos chips, cases of bottled water, Gatorade in 20-ounce bottles, frozen lemonade and frozen strawberries.
It takes more than 300 volunteers for the Fourth of July celebration. All volunteers receive a T-shirt provided by sponsorships of area businesses and organizations.
The fireworks production is presented by Krueger Pyrotechnics and Firework Displays and Johnny B Enterprises and will start around 9:30 to 9:45 p.m. The proceeds from the Fourth of July celebration will be used toward the new Twining south shelter.
