MONROE - Former Monroe Fire Chief Tom Casey Sr., 88, Monroe, died Monday, according to an e-mail statement from Monroe Fire Chief Daryl Rausch.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of former Monroe Fire Chief Tom Casey Sr." Rausch said, in the statement.

Casey was a member of the Monroe Fire Department from 1957 to 1985. He served as fire chief from 1979 to 1985. He also was a member of the Southern Wisconsin Northern Illinois Fire Rescue Association.

Ken Rufer, who has been a volunteer with the Monroe Fire Department since 1964, remembered Casey as a "good guy." Rufer served along side Casey as a firefighter. The department was a little smaller in numbers back in the early 1960s, Rufer said.

Volunteers, just as they do now, had to put in a lot of time to be a volunteer, he said.

"He gave up a lot of his personal time to serve on the department," Rufer said. "He was a working fellow as well as a volunteer firefighter."

Rufer said Casey cared about the department and also was involved with the annual fire school.

Funeral arrangements for Casey are pending with Shriner-Hager-Gohlke Funeral Home, Monroe.
