MONROE - Once the home of the Green County Humane Society, a rundown property along Wisconsin 69 is going up for sale.
The City of Monroe Public Property Committee voted unanimously Tuesday, Sept. 17, to advertise for sealed bids on the city-owned property at 1500 6th Ave., reserving the right to accept or reject any or all bids. Bidders will be asked to submit their plans for using or developing the property, about one-quarter of an acre. The deadline for bids will be Oct. 15.
The city had planned to use the building on the property to store extra garbage and recycling carts, but members of the committee opted to put the property back on the tax rolls instead.
The idea of selling the property, which remained tax-exempt city property while being used by the Green County Humane Society for decades, came last week when a business owner asked about purchasing the property. Alderman Tyler Schultz submitted the inquiry for the interested party.
The city has also received an offer to purchase the water department building at 1065 5th Ave. Committee members met in closed session to discuss the offer, but did not reconvene in open session to take action. The water department is scheduled to move into new offices on the wastewater treatment plant site in the spring.
