MONROE - Two helicopters returning from a standoff in Richland County made emergency landings in Green County on Thursday night because of poor visibility caused by weather conditions.
The Green County Sheriff's Department received a call around 9:15 p.m. of a helicopter that landed in a field in the N5000 block of Buckskin Road in Washington township. Another helicopter landed at the Monroe Municipal Airport.
Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said the helicopters were returning to Kenosha and Rockford when the rain turned into snow. The pilots decided to land due to low visibility.
The helicopters will be removed today, Roderick said.
The helicopters had been used during a daylong standoff between police and a man with anti-government attitudes. The man surrendered, but not before an exchange of gunfire, deployment of tear gas and a fire in the man's house.
